| So You Would Like Help Thinking About a Topic Aside from topics such as drugs, sex or violence, there are no wrong topics. We dont want any essays that deal with topics that promote illegal activities or are morally offensive. However, you have to think. You will need to make some opinions and take a stand on an idea or issue. We just ask that you write on an area that you feel strongly about. To brainstorm ideas, try reflecting on the following questions. > What do you spend most of your time doing? > What do you enjoy doing the most? > What are you most thankful for? > Think through the things that you feel are important and then picture how your life would be without these things. Often looking at a book of quotations or browsing a magazine or newspaper can stimulate a topic for an essay. Here are some specific topic ideas that inspire personal growth. * Being drug free * Imagination. * Never giving up * Daring to try * Believing in myself * My individuality * Equality * Seizing the day * Following your dreams * Having a good education * Honesty * Believing * Having faith * Caring for others * My family * Grandparents * Heroes * My pet * Having good friends * Working hard * Athletic competition * Being physically fit * Being brave There may be a class that you like in school that can provide a topic or a class that assigned an essay and you want to send it in. These topics would be like the following. SCIENCE Science The ocean Exploring space The invention of____ Preserving our environment Computers HISTORY The Heroes of 9-11 The soldiers who fought for my freedom The Declaration of Independence Learning about our past The contributions made by the (Greeks, Romans, Egyptians etc) THE ARTS Music Dancing Art ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS Being a good writer Reading Books The message left by Anne Frank (this topic can be used for any book) What makes a good essay? We ask that you write on an area that you feel strongly about. Essays will be judged on both style and content. Judges will look for writing that is clear, articulate and logically organized. Make sure your first lines introduce the topic. Follow this by your reasons that your topic is important to you and end with a closing statement that leaves the reader agreeing with you.
