Young Poets Speak out on Divorce
| Who is Creative Communication? Creative Communication is devoted to the promotion of writing, teaching and appreciation of poetry and writing. Since 1993, Creative Communication, the publisher of Poetic Power, has sponsored poetry contests. In 2004, we started also having essay contests. For each contest over $70,000 is awarded to students in grades K-12 and adult poets and $17,000 to schools. The intent of the contests is to reward creative students. The top entries in the contest are published in anthologies that record the insights of today's young writers. The judges meet the goal of being selective enough so that it is an honor to be accepted, yet not so exclusive that it is discouraging to enter, by rejecting more than 50% of the entries received. Several of our staff have degrees in literature, theater and education. There is no entry fee or purchase required to be published. This is a contest in which the judges are professional educators and poets. There is no requirement for a student to purchase an anthology in order to be published. Winners in the contest receive a savings bond and a complimentary copy of the anthology. For other entries of merit, if a student wishes to purchase an anthology, it is made available at an affordable price. Schools whose student's entries exhibit exceptional merit are recognized by being awarded a Writing Achievement Award in which they receive a special certificate, a complimentary copy of the anthology, and qualify to apply for one of two $250 Language Arts Grants that we award to each state or region. A total of over 50 grants totalling over $17,000 is given each year. In addition, numerous books are distributed free to any teacher who has 5 or more students accepted to be published. Creative Communication also works closely with teachers throughout the country through the publishing of Poetic Power. Having collected hundreds of strategies that teachers use to promote poetry in the classroom, these ideas are organized in a bi-annual newsletter called Poetic Power. This newsletter is then emailed to thousands of language arts teachers in the US and Canada. Recently, Creative Communication made the move to not publish other materials and to focus on literature and language arts projects that are generated by our staff. Current projects that are being developed consist of a series of beautifully illustrated children's books and books of poetry from the best of our poets. In 2001 we published Broken hearts...healing: Young Poets Speak Out on Divorce. It was recognized as one of the top 76 books published for our youth by the independent bookstores across America. VOYA (Voices of Youth Advocacy) also made it one of their honor books for 2002. I hope that Creative Communication will be of service to your students and your school. In taking the time to read the comments sent to us from parents, teachers and students, you will find that we are proud of the relationship that we have created with thousands of young writers and schools across the United States. We hope that we can continue to assist in the promotion of student writing and give these students a positive motivation to continue their writing. Gaylen Worthen President |
